It’s time for a pre-summer detox! Fresh, organic strawberries and water-rich grapefruit make an excellent blend to help prepare you for beach weather!
Grapefruit is one of the best detox fruits. Not only does it help clear your skin, it is among the most water rich fruits which help flush toxins out of your body. The fiber “scrubs” your intestines and moves toxins out. (If you don’t like grapefruit, simply substitute it for a large orange.)
I wanted to put dandelion greens in this smoothie because they are super cleansing. However, I just couldn’t bring myself to mix dandelion greens with grapefruit in the same smoothie. That combo is definitely not for everyone! If you’re not afraid of a bitter bite, then go ahead and use it, otherwise, use spinach like I did.
When you’re detoxing, you want to avoid artificial sweeteners and dried fruit (like dates) as much as possible, so I sweetened this smoothie with a small banana. It’s definitely not a “sweet” smoothie, but it helped moderate the grapefruit flavor.
Grapefruits contain compounds that interfere with certain medications such as statin drugs like Lipitor and Zocor. If you are on any medications, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist before consuming grapefruit.

- 1 grapefruit, peeled and deseeded
- 10 medium strawberries
- 1 banana, peeled
- 2 cups baby spinach
Start by adding the liquid to your blender (I use a Vitamix), followed by the soft fruit. Add the greens to your blender last. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.
Calcium: 12% RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance)
Folate: 200.8 mcg
Vitamin A: 61% RDA
Vitamin C: 233% RDA
This smoothie is also a rich source of folate, vitamin B1 – B6, vitamin K, copper, manganese, phosphorus and potassium.
Serving Size: One. (This recipe makes a large, 32-ounce smoothie. It is a meal-replacement smoothie and not a snack. I recommend drinking half right away and the other half about 30 minutes later. If it is too much for you, store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.)
