Lemon-Orange Green SmoothieLemons are an excellent fruit to add to your smoothie. This recipe provides a solid dose of natural vitamin C and also provides a good source of calcium and antioxidants. Drinking smoothies made with citrus fruit like lemons and oranges may provide anti-cancer benefits as the limonoids in citrus have been shown to fight cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, breast, stomach and colon.

This smoothie is also great for healthy skin. Lemons contain citric acid which can be effective in treating acne. The vitamin C found in citrus fruits is important for getting healthy glowing skin while its alkaline nature kills some types of bacteria known to cause acne.

Oranges have been shown to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol as well as having anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin C in oranges are associated with reduced risk of colon cancer.

Lemons, oranges and apples all facilitate detox. Overall, this is a nutrient packed smoothie that will help you lose weight, cleans and give you lots of energy.

Lemon-Orange with Apple Smoothie Recipe

  • 1/2 large lemon, peeled
  • 1 large orange, peeled
  • 1 large organic apple, cored
  • 2 cups or handfuls organic baby spinach (or other leafy green)
  • 4 to 6 ounces of filtered of water

Add all the ingredients except for the spinach to your blender, (I use a Blendtec) and hit the “pulse” button a few times. Next, add the spinach and blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.

You can squeeze the lemon into the smoothie but I just peel it and toss it in like an orange. You can, of course, substitute lime for lemon or even grapefruit for orange.

Another recommendation I’d make is to drink this particular smoothie with a straw if you regularly drink smoothies with acid fruits. It is important to only use fully ripe lemons and oranges to minimize acid wear on your teeth.
