When it comes to defending our problems with excuses, we are our own worst enemy.
We create excuses in our minds for why we can’t do what we really wish we could. We rationalize inaction by using our imaginations to create scenarios of failure and disaster.
Excuses are not based on our reality, though. They are choices that we make. We choose to hide behind our excuses rather than step beyond our comfort zone.
Before I started working for myself, I had my share of excuses for why I couldn’t do what I wanted to for a living. But I found a way to turn my negative thinking (excuses) into positive affirmations that accelerated the reality of my new life.
I have found through my personal journey of quitting my full time job and pursuing my dreams as a writer that using positive affirmations helped me cultivate a mindset of success.
Yes, I know. Some of you reading this will probably roll your eyes because you feel silly saying positive affirmations. I did too. I thought they were hokey and lame.
Until I decided to make them a habit. They work.
So stop feeling silly and take an excuse that you are using right now to rationalize inaction, and flip it around into a positive affirmation.
The Negative Excuse
Okay, let’s pick apart a random negative excuse and expose it to the harsh light of truth.
“I can’t live the way I want because I’m broke and stuck in my day job.”
Now that is an A-class negative excuse right there!
This statement doesn’t provide a legitimate reason for not acting toward your goals. Being broke or feeling stuck in a day job doesn’t mean that you can’t get out of your comfort zone, make a little sacrifice, and hustle to build something that will eventually free yourself from your financial and employment obligation.
What this statement says is that you are afraid of embracing happiness (and success) and that you are more comfortable staying put in your current situation even though it is painful or unfulfilling.
The truth hurts, doesn’t it? Let’s not dwell on the negative, let’s turn this statement into a life changing positive affirmation!
Flipping A Negative Excuse Into A Positive Affirmation
Let’s take the same lame negative excuse from above and turn it into a positive affirmation.
I am living a life I love while building wealth and abundance.
Ah! Now that sounds MUCH better!
By countering the negative excuse from above with the positive affirmation we just created, we are changing your energy vibration to a much higher (positive) level.
The negative excuse triggers feelings of lack, want, desire, unhappiness, frustration, resentment, helplessness, hopelessness, and fear.
The positive affirmation, instead, triggers feelings of happiness, lightness, hope, motivation, abundance, wealth, and opportunity.
Your life situation won’t magically change in an instant by saying positive affirmations. I get that. They aren’t spells.
However, reciting positive affirmations on a daily basis and allowing yourself to FEEL the positive energy they produce will accelerate change in your life!
Why? Because when you shift from a stuck, hopeless mindset toward a positive, empowered one, you are better able to see opportunities.
Success in any change in life is driven by faith in yourself, as well as a positive frame of mind to notice (and create) opportunities that are (and have always been) all around you!
Tips For Turning Negative Excuses Into Positive Affirmations
Here is how I turned my negative excuses into positive affirmations.
1. Make sure that your affirmation is taking place in the NOW.
The most powerful energy is the energy you have right now, in this moment.
When creating positive affirmations, focus on the now. Instead of saying something like, “I will be happy”, or I will be wealthy, say something like “I AM happy”, “I HAVE enough money for everything I want.”
Don’t make affirmations conditional upon future events or goals. Don’t make them into wants or wishes. These only create a gulf between you and a life you love.
Create affirmations that are relevant right now! Even if they are not literally true, recite them anyway – FEEL their emotional power. It’s a process, but stick with it.
2. Own Your Affirmations
An affirmation isn’t a statement about what you want, feel, do, etc. It’s your way of telling the universe what you ARE, CAN DO, and HAVE.
You might have heard the expression “fake it until you make it”. This advice is often given to people who want to break into difficult industries or careers. By faking it, they are tuning into the frequency of their goal without actually achieving it.
This, in turn, opens doors, creates opportunities, and bolsters confidence as you move into your desired life and out of your old one. It counters feelings of inadequacy, or that you are not worthy of success.
I used this principle when I was transitioning away from my career as a freelance videographer into a career as a natural health and personal development blogger.
When I woke up in the morning, I would tell myself that “I AM a blogger”, even if I had a video shoot that day that had nothing at all to do with personal development or natural health.
Own your affirmations and embrace them fully. Make them about you – who you are, what you are, what you do – now. Don’t write affirmations that put the focus on what you don’t have, are not, or want.
3. Make Your Positive Affirmations Visual
Positive affirmations have more power when you say them out loud. Hearing them makes them more real. Writing them down daily also cements them to your being. Another powerful way to make affirmations tangible is to make them visual.
When I was transitioning to my career as a natural health and personal development blogger, I began orienting my lifestyle and my environment to the one that I envisioned a full time blogger would have.
I replaced video industry items on my desk with things that a natural health or personal development blogger would have. These items provided visual cues that complemented my positive affirmations.
I wasn’t just saying and hearing (and feeling) my positive affirmations, I was seeing them too!
Go ahead and begin to transition into the life you desire even if you aren’t already there. Surround yourself with relevant books, images, people – lean into the life you want!
4. Don’t Give Up
It took me two years to go from full time videographer to full time blogger. Just because you say, “I AM….”, doesn’t mean that it will happen overnight. You WILL have what you want. Positive affirmations are a tool to help you get there.
They help you cultivate a success and abundance-oriented mindset instead of falling back into negative excuses and hopeless wants.
Recite positive affirmations daily. Say them out loud. Write them down. Use vision boards and other visual cues. Do these things daily. Do them several times each day.
Whatever you do, keep at it. If you feel silly, good! Feel silly and then feel positive, inspired and motivated!
