“I have started drinking green smoothies and so far, I am really enjoying them! I am close to 300 lbs and my goal is to lose 150 lbs. Would you please recommend different recipes for massive weight loss like this? Also, is it safe to replace all meals with green smoothies? Thank you for your help!” – Alexandra
Alexandra, I want to start by congratulating you on your resolve to lose weight. You’ve chosen wisely with green smoothies!
Before I get into my recommendations, I also want to remind you that I am not a doctor, so please do your own research and check with a qualified health care professional before making any drastic dietary change, especially when it comes to massive weight loss.
Massive Weight Loss With Green Smoothies
Just about every green smoothie recipe on Incredible Smoothies will facilitate weight loss. There isn’t one particular fruit or vegetable that magically sheds pounds more than any other.
The important thing to remember when making weight loss smoothies is to keep them simple. Only use (chilled) tea, water, coconut water or unsweetened plant milks (like almond milk). Skip the fruit juices because they are not a whole food, so they tend to add more sugar to your diet than you would otherwise get.
Avoid using a too much fat such as nuts, avocados and coconuts in your green smoothies. A recipe that calls for 8 ounces of almond milk and 1/4 avocado is fine, but don’t overdo the calorie-dense fats.
I also recommend keeping your weight loss green smoothies free of dairy (including milk and yogurt), as well as sweeteners (including honey, agave syrup, sugar, etc…). If you absolutely need a sweetener, use stevia or dates.
It’s More Than Just Green Smoothies, Though
As you know, weight loss is also more than just what you eat (or don’t eat). The rest of your diet and exercise also play an important role.
It is important that the rest of your diet is based on whole foods. A plant-based, whole foods diet is naturally lower in calories. It’s nearly impossible to overeat, and you’ll feel full and satisfied. By “plant-based”, I’m not necessarily referring to a vegan diet. Limiting animal fats, however, will help keep your calorie intake in check.
What does a plant-based, whole foods diet look like? I have a 28-day meal plan spelled out in my RESET 28 program for energy and weight loss. This is the meal plan I currently follow, and it uses all of the same foods I used when I lost 40 pounds back in 2008 with green smoothies and whole foods. I’ve kept that weight off for almost 7 years now!
Don’t Do A Smoothie-Only Diet
To answer your other question, I do not recommend going on a green smoothie-only diet. I feel that it is unnecessary and can lead to nutritional imbalances. You can read more about my stance on smoothie and juice diets here.
I recommend having a green smoothie for breakfast and/or lunch. Choose a healthy fruit and/or veggie snacks (as well as nuts) with a healthy, whole foods dinner. And start moving your body. I don’t expect you to start running 5Ks tomorrow, but start by committing to a 10 minute walk every day and go from there.
Massive Weight Loss Inspiration
And finally, I’d like to share a few massive weight loss stories that I published on my website. These are stories of 100+ pound weight loss from people who started with green smoothies. Here’s James’ 116-pound weight loss story, and Jendayi’s story, and Jeff’s 108 pounds shed in nine months.
Best of luck to you! You can do this!
