Dill Green SmoothieDill weed adds a sweet, fresh flavor to green smoothies. Fresh dill works well in many fruity smoothies and can be either used alone with fruit or combined with a delicate-flavored green such as baby spinach.

Health Benefits

Dill contains small amounts of calcium, iron, manganese, fiber and vitamins A and C. The main reason you might want to use dill is for the abundant antioxidants which may provide “chemo-protective” benefits that help protect against carcinogens such as second-hand smoke.

How To Use Dill In A Green Smoothie Recipe

Dill is a flavorful herb, so a little goes a long way. I never use more than a half of a bunch in a smoothie recipe that makes a blender pitcher full. You might want to start with a forth of a bunch, and then add more after you’ve sampled the result. Too much dill will overpower the smoothie and may give you “dill breath” for a while after drinking it.

You can blend dill with other greens in a smoothie as well. I recommend using fresh baby spinach because of it’s delicate flavor.

I have found that dill blends well with banana, pineapple and citrus fruits such as oranges. You can add a little bit to just about any smoothie recipe.

Recipes

Pineapple-Dill

– 1 cup fresh pineapple
– 1 whole orange, peeled
– 1/2 bunch of fresh dill
– 8 ounces of water
– 1 handful of fresh baby spinach (optional)

Banana-Dill

– 2-3 whole bananas, peeled
– 1/2 bunch of fresh dill
– 8 ounces of water

Morning OJ Kickstart *

– 2-3 whole oranges, peeled
– 1/2 bunch of fresh dill
– a splash of water if needed to blend

* This recipe makes a pulpy orange juice rather than a thick smoothie. Add a little extra water prior to blending, then strain the contents if you want a juice without the pulp.

How To Select Dill

Choose fresh dill weed over dried dill, especially for use in smoothies. The leaves are feathery and green, but slightly wilted dill is still okay to use since it does become limp after being picked. Keep it in the fridge and use it up quickly as it does not stay fresh for long.

As with any green, I highly recommend only using organic dill to avoid pesticide residues that tend to be found at higher levels on greens.
