Lychee Smoothie Recipes and Nutrition

Lychees are extremely delicious. Cultivated in Asia, they have a wonderfully delicate sweet flavor and are excellent on their own or blended in a smoothie, if carefully paired with the right fruits.

They have a soft, white flesh surrounded by a pinkish-red, roughly textured rind. The rind is easy to peel off revealing the flesh. There is a seed inside the fruit that is toxic and should not be eaten.

Lychee Nutrition and Health Benefits

Lychees are rich in vitamin C, with nine of them making up about 100% daily value of vitamin C for an adult.

A 100-gram serving of lychee fruit (66 calories) provides 7.8% Daily Value (DV) of copper, 4.89% DV of potassium, and 3.1% DV of phosphorus, as well as other minerals and vitamins.

Lychees are also a good source of antioxidants, particularly polyphenols and anthocyanins.

How To Use Lychee In A Green Smoothie Recipe

Lychees are small and so I usually use nine in a typical smoothie recipe. Even so, they are low-calorie fruit so I don’t recommend using them in a meal-replacement green smoothie since you will overpower their delicate flavor too easily.

Lychees have a mild flavor that is is best accented with other tropical fruits like bananas, a small amount of pineapple, passion fruit, citrus, coconut, or even mint.

Use mild greens like fresh baby spinach, and avoid bitter greens like dandelion and kale.

Be sure to remove the skin and seed inside before blending.

How To Select And Store Lychee

Try to select lychee that have a pink or red peel. They should be slightly firm, but not too soft.

It is virtually impossible to find organic lychees, but I do not feel it is necessary because the peel isn’t eaten, and they don’t make up a significant or regular part of the diet.
