Yes, you read correctly! Below is a recipe for a HEALTHY (well, healthier!) dark chocolate green smoothie loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants! If you like dark chocolate, you’ll like this!

As is, this smoothie has the flavor of extra dark chocolate. You can modify the flavor by adding vanilla bean, flavored protein powder or add sweetener to decrease the bitterness of the dark chocolate. For a sweetener, I recommend using stevia for this particular smoothie.

If you do not have mangoes on hand, use peaches or bananas for the base fruit.

Why Raw Chocolate?

Cacao (raw chocolate from the cacao bean) is a healthier addition to a green smoothie than processed chocolate syrups or powders because you’ll benefit from the heat-sensitive antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Making chocolate smoothies with cacao is a great way to lift your mood and get your chocolate fix without the fear of gaining weight or consuming excess sugar and additives, although I do recommend that you use it as an indulgence and not as a regularly consumed health food. Cacao nibs and raw cacao powder can be found at certain health food stores or purchased online.

Healthy Dark Chocolate Green Smoothie Recipe

  • 1/2 large mango
  • 3/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 2 cups (or handfuls) of raw, baby spinach
  • 1/4 cup raw cacao nibs (or 1/8 cup raw cacao powder)
  • 4 to 6 ounces of filtered water
  • sweetener (optional)

Add all the ingredients to your blender, (I use a Blendtec) and blend on high for 30 seconds or until the smoothie is creamy.

Note: If you don’t have a high-speed blender you’ll want to grind the cacao nibs or beans in a coffee grinder before adding them to your blender. Cacao powder may be used instead.
