5 More Green Smoothie Remedies (Migraines, Cataracts, Alzheimer’s Disease, Colon and Prostate Cancers)

Here are five more green smoothie remedies pulled straight from my book, Green Smoothie Remedies & Prevention. The book features over 200 delicious green smoothie recipes based on research gathered from over 140 peer-reviewed, scientific journals.

1 – Knock Out Migraines With Leafy Greens

A June 2009 article in The Clinical Journal of Pain reviewed potential supplements that might provide benefit to migraine sufferers. At the top of their list was magnesium. (1)

Leafy greens are an especially rich source of magnesium and they just so happen to make up a fundamental part of the green smoothie.

2 – Reduce Your Risk Of Getting Cataracts With Spinach And Broccoli

A study published in the October 1999 issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men who had the highest amount of dietary intakes of lutein and zeaxanthin reduced their risk of cataracts by up to 19%. The foods that were identified as providing the strongest protection were broccoli and spinach. (2)

Apples are rich in a digestion-resistant fiber called pectin that is fermented in the large intestine (colon). The microflora in the colon ferments pectin (and other dietary fiber) to produce a substance called butyrate. Butyrate is thought to be a “chemopreventive metabolite that can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer, one of the most abundant types of cancer in Western industrialized countries.” (3)

4 – Slow Down Prostate Cancer Tumor Growth With Flax Seeds

Flax seeds have been shown to stunt the growth of prostate tumors in men. A 2007 study led by Duke University Medical Center researchers showed that men who supplemented their diet with ground flax seed (30 grams per day for an average of 30 days) slowed tumor growth compared to men who did not supplement with flax seeds in the diet. Nine published studies from Dr. Shea’s group demonstrated brain-enhancing benefits from eating apples and drinking apple juice.

His research showed a 27% decrease in anxiety, agitation, delusion and other behavioral and psychotic symptoms associated with dementia in those with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s who drank two, 4-ounce glasses of apple juice daily for one month. (5)
