Green Smoothie Inspiration: Richard Bullock – San Francisco, CA USA
“My name is Rich and I’m a 48 year old father of two phenomenal kids. I was always very athletic, from a young kid “living” at the playground playing whatever sport was in season, through college and even played some semi pro baseball here in the Bay Area and professional basketball in Italy. I trained like crazy, running, weights, team practices, was never a junk food junkie but marveled friends and family by the large amounts of food I could consume while remaining fairly slim because of my workout regimen.
Fast forward 20 years, a couple job changes including multiple moves to Bologna, Italy and their twice a day pasta and vino meals and A LOT less exercise. Compound that with a devastating knee injury I suffered at work in 2009 that had me laid up with my knee immobilized for five months, rehab for another seven months while missing an entire year of work. I also maintained my eating and wine drinking habits I so proudly associated with being Italian and after stepping on a scale noticed I had added 70 lbs of pure lard to my frame.
Two years ago I decided to give up the vino habit, got back into a good gym routine and after doing a lot of research on nutrition (studying everyday, you can never know too much about your health!) and with the help in large part to your website and your information I am now consuming a green smoothie for breakfast, a green smoothie for lunch and a large bowl of steamed veggies and beans for dinner.
My typical green smoothie consists of the following ingredients:
– 1 cup almond milk (I make here as per your recipe)
– 1 cup water
– 1 banana
– 1 carrot
– 1 stalk celery
– 1 small cucumber
– 1/2 of a small red beet
– 6 leaves kale
– 6 leaves rainbow chard
– 1 tsp cinnamon
– 1 tsp cayenne pepper
– 1 Tbsp ground flax seeds
– 1 Tbsp hemp powder
– 1/2 cup blueberries
– 1/2 cup pineapple chunks
In the past two years I have easily dropped more than 60 pounds and am continuing to lose weight slowly and healthily while feeling a TON better, much more energetic and am even stronger than I have EVER been in the gym! Also, it seemed like I would get sick very often. Guys at work even commented that I always seemed to cough, sniff and sneeze. It’s now been almost a year that I’ve even had the most minimal sniffle which even then lasted less than one day.
My wife and son make smoothies on a daily basis and both are vegetarian/vegan. My daughter will have one every now and then but hasn’t made the move to vegetarianism…yet! I have a friend and co-worker who is 24 years old and in remission from colon cancer. He has been bringing a smoothie to work everyday and is paying much more attention to his food intake. He has also lost a good amount of weight, taken up running and really feeling good about himself! He and I often talk about food, the impact nutrition has on our health and share smoothie recipes.
I know my mission to better health is a lifelong mission. And I have forever to tweak it, better it, and I strive to be as strong and healthy as I possibly can. It may sound funny but I actually get a sense of euphoria when I think of the good foods I’m putting into my body and while I’m cutting, chopping and blending my foods for the upcoming workday. I look forward to each day of learning more and more about health, healthy foods, and dedicating myself to teaching my children the benefits of achieving and maintaining their good health.
