			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Green-smoothie1.jpg" alt="" title="Green-smoothie1" width="275" height="221" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1754" />Are green smoothies <em>really</em> healthy for you or do they contain too much fruit and sugar?  Should people who want to lose weight avoid them?</p>
<p>These are just a couple of the controversies going around about green smoothies, and it&#8217;s nothing new.  There will always be people who claim that they are not as healthy as they appear, despite the proven track record for weight loss and the <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/green-smoothies/green-smoothie-health-benefits/">many health benefits</a> of blending fruits and greens in a blender.</p>
<p>I want to address some of the main concerns about green smoothies here.</p>
<h4>The Green Smoothie Weight Loss Controversy</h4>
<p>It truly surprises me that there is even a controversy about using green smoothies for weight loss.  Fruity green smoothies played an instrumental role in <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/greensmoothieprogram/index.html">my 40-pound weight loss</a> and they have helped <em>thousands</em> of people lose weight using my recipes and information on Incredible Smoothies.  </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been drinking green smoothies <em>every single day</em> going on my fifth year now and I easily maintain my ideal weight.  And I eat WAY more fruit in a day than the average person eats in a week.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, there is a controversy, so let me clear up some of the confusion for you.</p>
<p><strong>Calorie Reduction Controversy:</strong> The most recent exposé about the &#8220;unhealthiness&#8221; of green smoothies is <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2664987/?tool=pubmed" target="_blank">this health study</a> comparing the satiety of different forms of fruit (whole apple, apple sauce, apple juice and apple juice with fiber added) and how it affects total calorie intake.</p>
<p>The study found that eating a whole apple reduced calorie intake of the following meal by 15% while consuming apple sauce decreased calorie intake by 6% in the following meal.  Drinking apple juice with fiber reduced calorie consumption of a meal by only 1% while straight up apple juice actually increased calorie intake by 3%.</p>
<p>Assumptions based on the data presented by this study suggests that eating whole fruits promotes a significant decrease in calorie consumption while pureed fruit is not as effective at reducing overall calorie intake.  However, there is a big difference between a freshly blended green smoothie and cooked apple sauce.  You can&#8217;t even compare the two as they contain different foods and are processed in completely different ways.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the conclusion of the study explicitly state that &#8220;more research is needed to test the effects of consuming different forms of fruit on energy intake over longer periods of time before conclusions about the role of fruit in different forms in weight management can be made.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, that doesn&#8217;t stop people from jumping to conclusions about green smoothies based on research comparing apples to applesauce.</p>
<p>In the context of green smoothies, they should be added to the diet.  I do not ever recommend drinking a green smoothie only diet.  Green smoothies are best used to supplement a plant-based, whole foods diet.  Replacing one to two meals per day with a large, 400-500 calorie green smoothie provides great weight loss results.  Green smoothies can help people on a raw food diet, or a whole foods diet, consume sufficient calories of whole foods to help them lose weight while feeling satisfied.</p>
<p>A calorie-sufficient green smoothie MEAL will satisfy your hunger until your next meal and reduce overall calorie intake for the day as long as the rest of your diet isn&#8217;t atrocious.  Drinking a green smoothie in the morning won&#8217;t undo a day of eating baked goods, cheese, pizza, ice cream and other fattening foods.  Drink green smoothies as part of a whole foods diet and don&#8217;t forget to exercise.</p>
<p><strong>Blending Fiber And Weight Loss:</strong>  So what about fiber?  There is technically the same amount of fiber in a whole apple and a blended apple.  Of course, the blended apple is broken down more thoroughly before you eat it than a whole apple.  But does this make the blended apple less healthy and therefore sabotaging to weight loss?</p>
<p>That has not been my experience.  As I mentioned above, green smoothies were instrumental to my 40 pound weight loss.  They have helped thousands of people lose weight.  I&#8217;ve heard tremendous things from people who have purchased my <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/greensmoothieprogram/index.html">Green Smoothie Weight Loss program</a>. Green smoothies are part of my whole foods diet, so I&#8217;m not at all concerned about any fiber breakdown in a smoothie.</p>
<p>I will also repeat that I do not ever advocate a smoothie-only diet.  Primarily, I use green smoothies to get greens into my diet.  Green smoothies are the only way I can eat the amount of kale, dandelion and other bitter and healthy greens that I do every day. But green smoothies should not be the only thing you eat to lose weight or detox.</p>
<h4>Green Smoothies And Sugar Intake</h4>
<p>There is also concern about diabetics drinking green smoothies and overloading on carbohydrates.  This is a valid concern.  Diabetics must work with their doctor or dietician to establish an appropriate amount of carbohydrate intake per meal, then plan their fruit and green smoothie consumption accordingly.  </p>
<p>Diabetics don&#8217;t necessarily have to avoid green smoothies or fruit, in fact, the American Diabetes Association encourages fruit intake.  Those with metabolic disorders must regularly check their blood sugar levels and restrict or limit carbohydrates according to how their body responds based on their post-meal glucose readings.</p>
<p>It is not necessary, however, for non-diabetic people to pro-actively restrict fruit or green smoothie intake in order to prevent the disease as there is no evidence that drinking green smoothies, or increasing fruit intake causes diabetes.</p>
<p>All fruit has a <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/nutrition/glycemic-index-vs-glycemic-load/">low glycemic load</a>.  I don&#8217;t worry about choosing &#8220;low sugar&#8221; fruits over &#8220;high sugar&#8221; fruits.  Instead, I focus on consuming a whole foods, calorie-sufficient diet that provides adequate nutrients.  That includes foods like bananas and watermelon as well as berries, veggies and other low and no-sugar whole plant foods.</p>
<h4>General Fruit Phobia and Fructose Alarmism</h4>
<p>  There is also a general fruit phobia and fructose alarmism that simply doesn&#8217;t make any sense whatsoever.  Some of the most fruit-phobic people out there would have you think that eating a banana is somewhere at the same level of eating a glazed donut!</p>
<p>Yes, fruit contains fructose.  Yes, pure, isolated fructose has been shown to contribute to weight gain. High fructose corn syrup (or &#8220;corn sugar&#8221; as it is now called) is absolutely not healthy. However, there is no pure, isolated fructose in green smoothies and fresh fruit.  Instead of isolated sugar (like if you drank a can of soda pop), green smoothies contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytonutrients, fiber, protein and fat.</p>
<p>I encourage you to move away from &#8220;isolated nutrient thinking&#8221;.  Everything you eat has negative compounds in it.  All leafy greens contain toxins.  Many vegetables and fruits contain toxins and anti-nutrients.  Too much of anything &#8211; vitamins, minerals, fat, carbohydrates &#8211; will cause health problems.  The key is balance.  Your body is equipped to handle anti-nutrients in food.</p>
<p>Healthy people don&#8217;t need to worry about the oxalic content of a normal serving of spinach, or the glucosinolate content of a normal serving of kale, or the fructose content of a fruit salad or green smoothie &#8211; unless a diagnosed (by a doctor) health condition warrants it.</p>
<h4>Destruction Of Nutrients</h4>
<p> There is no evidence to back up the claim that blending green smoothies in a blender <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/faq-questions-answers/qa-does-blending-green-smoothies-destroy-90-of-nutrients/">destroys up to 92% of nutrients</a>.  If that were true, I would be severely malnourished after four years of drinking them every day.  The reasoning behind this claim is flawed and over-simplistic.</p>
<h4>Green Smoothies For People With Health Conditions</h4>
<p>My green smoothie recommendations and recipes are geared for healthy people with no pre-existing health conditions.  I cannot possibly share smoothie recipes that are appropriate for all people, regardless of illness, metabolism, age, diet, genetics, etc&#8230;</p>
<p>If you have a diagnosed health condition and you are wondering whether or not green smoothies should be a part of your diet, or if they might cause harm, then you should discuss your concerns with a doctor or registered dietician.  Explain your goal (more fruits and vegetables, especially greens, in the diet) and establish some dietary guidelines for fruits and smoothies that are appropriate for your unique medical circumstances.</p>
<p>Countless scientific health studies indicate that an increase of fruits and vegetables in the diet is associated with a reduced risk of many chronic diseases.  There is a lot of research associating an increase of fruits and vegetables in the diet with a reduction of symptoms and lower severity of certain diseases and medical conditions.  Fruits, vegetables and green smoothies are your friends, not your enemies.</p>
<p>But if you have a medical condition, or a metabolic disorder, then you need to work with your doctor or nutritionist.</p>
<h4>Should Green Smoothies Contain Mostly Fruit Or Mostly Vegetables?</h4>
<p>And finally, let&#8217;s address one last controversy about green smoothies.  Should you make them with mostly fruit?  Or should you add a little bit of fruit and stuff a ton of green in there?</p>
<p>In general, my green smoothies contain 60% fruit and 40% greens by volume.  My typical 32-ounce meal replacement green smoothie will contain about 400-500 calories &#8211; about 4 pieces of fruit (banana, mango, apple and orange) and an entire head of romaine lettuce (or four cups of other leafy green). Adding this much fruit provides the calories to make this smoothie a meal.</p>
<p>A vegetable-based smoothie will not provide sufficient calories to be a meal replacement smoothie.  Even if you made a 32-ounce smoothie with just one apple, 1/2 cup blueberries and a ton of vegetables and greens, you won&#8217;t come anywhere close to 400 calories.  You&#8217;d be lucky to get 200 calories.</p>
<p>The problem with this is that you might still feel full from the fiber, but you risk under-consuming calories, especially if you follow a raw food or whole foods diet.  Getting too few calories <em>will</em> sabotage weight loss and lead to nutrient deficiencies and health problems.</p>
<p>In short, fruit-based green smoothies can replace meals and are effective for weight loss.</p>
<p>Vegetable-based smoothies are too low in calories to be considered meals, so they are better used to <em>supplement</em> a calorie-sufficient whole foods diet between meals or consumed with meals.</p>
<p>Unless you are physically bothered by fruity green smoothies, I don&#8217;t think you need to worry about restricting fruit (or green smoothie intake).  If you are concerned about sugar, look into other areas of your diet first.  Cut out all refined sweeteners, <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/recipes/how-to-kick-the-soda-pop-habit-and-finally-lose-weight/">soda pop</a>, fruit juice, white rice and white bread.  Green smoothies should replace unhealthy foods.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t think of any other subject that has more controversy than nutrition and diet.  You can save yourself the headache, confusion and worry by simply focusing on a calorie-sufficient, whole foods diet and regularly <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/healthy-living/how-to-order-your-own-blood-tests/">test your blood</a> to ensure that what you are doing is providing the results you are looking for.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m done with nitpicking foods and getting caught up in isolated nutrient controversies.  Eating food shouldn&#8217;t cause anxiety, frustration and fear.  So drink up your fruity green smoothie, watch the weight come off and <em>enjoy your life!</em></p>

<p>Blending does not destroy fiber.  A high-speed, professional blender might break it down, but you don&#8217;t get less fiber in a blended smoothie than you would if you ate the whole fruit.  If anything, you are more likely to enhance nutrient absorption and speed up digestion. The fiber will still be in there to provide its health benefits.</p>
<p>Juicing, on the other hand, removes fiber.  Because of this, we don&#8217;t recommend juice fasts or juice diets.  We also don&#8217;t recommend drinking lots of juice every day (especially fruit juice) since fiber is such an important part of a healthy diet.  Consuming adequate dietary fiber has been associated with better health, proper bowel function and some experts believe it may help protect against colon cancer.</p>
<p>As far as adding a fiber supplement to a green smoothie, we advise against doing this for a couple reasons.  </p>
<p>First of all, a green smoothie provides a rich source of soluble (in the &#8220;flesh&#8221; part of a fruit) and insoluble (usually in the peel or skin) fiber.  In general, people should get at least 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed.  If you eat a 2,000 calorie diet, you should aim for getting at least 28 grams of fiber per day.</p>
<p>A simple green smoothie made with one medium banana, one medium pear, four large strawberries and two cups of fresh spinach will contain about 12 grams of fiber (245 calories, about 16-18 ounces).  That&#8217;s almost 50% of the recommended daily intake of fiber in just one green smoothie!  A plant-based, whole foods diet will provide ample fiber without the need to supplement.  Obtaining fiber from whole foods like fresh fruits and vegetables is, in our opinion, much better than taking an extracted, isolated fiber supplement since you are also getting important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well.</p>
<p>Secondly, a possible negative with adding a fiber supplement to a green smoothie is that you could be taking too much fiber.  Excess fiber consumption may lead to mineral loss. It may also lead to constipation, digestive discomfort, gas, bloating and other problems.  Excess fiber consumption is unlikely from food sources, but can happen when supplemented. As with most nutrients, it is always best and safest to take them in the form nature provides &#8211; whole, fresh foods.  Green smoothies are an excellent source of dietary fiber.</p>

As you probably know, greens love to wilt and spoil before you have a chance to use them. </p>
<p>After years of eating a TON of greens (we buy 12-15 bunches <em>at a time</em>), Davy and I have learned a few tricks for keeping leafy greens fresh for as long as possible.</p>
<p>As soon as we come home after buying greens, I place them into plastic tubs lined with paper towel.  We reuse the 1 pound tubs that baby spinach or mixed greens come in. You can also buy <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-7J93-Produce-Storage-Containers/dp/B0012DS4GG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1322857789&#038;sr=8-2" target="_blank">produce tubs</a> at kitchen and home stores. </p>
<p>To regulate moisture in the plastic tub, I tear a paper towel in half and line the bottom.  Then I add the greens and cover them with the other half of the paper towel before putting the lid on.  I might add a layer of paper towel between bunches of greens if they are particularly wet (from the misters in the produce displays).</p>
<p>I do not pre-wash leafy greens.  I usually cut the ends of the stems off, usually just above or below where the twist tie bundles them together.  When placing them in the refrigerator, I always make sure the the stem-side faces the back of the fridge. Delicate greens may freeze if the leafy tips are up against the back of the fridge where it is coldest.</p>
<p>If you are only buying a few greens, you could also use a large resealable bag. Make sure you squeeze as much air out as possible and toss in a half-sheet of paper towel to absorb excess moisture.  Leave the bag open about an inch or two to promote air flow.  Never store greens in produce bags as they will rapidly wilt, yellow and get slimy.</p>
<p>Storage times for greens may vary.  If you buy them really fresh, they&#8217;ll last longer than if you buy them when they are just starting to wilt.  Kale and chard will last longer than dandelion greens and spinach so use those the first part of the week and save the heartier greens for later in the week. </p>
<p>Kale and collards lasts the longest and may keep for up to a week or longer using my tub storage method.  Dandelion greens and most lettuces generally last about 3-5 days if kept relatively dry.  Chard may last up to 4-5 days. Baby spinach and mixed greens that you buy in bulk may last 3-4 days depending on their freshness and moisture.</p>
<p>As far as washing leafy greens, all I do is run them under tap water to remove any dirt or debris.  I don&#8217;t use a veggie wash and I don&#8217;t use any disinfectant (as long as I am not traveling outside the United States).  I wash my greens just prior to using.</p>
<p>These tips helped us cut down on trips to the grocery store.  Greens never go bad on us, even when we buy 15 or more bunches at a time.  Our biggest challenge with greens now is fitting them all in the refrigerator after we&#8217;ve gotten them home!</p>

<h4>How Much Leafy Greens Do You Eat In A Week?</h4>
<p>I love the reaction I get from people when I tell them that I eat two bunches of greens each day.  They say, &#8220;Two handfuls?&#8221; and I say, &#8220;No! Two BUNCHES &#8211; like two heads of romaine lettuce or eight cups of kale and spinach!&#8221;  The next question out of their mouth is usually about how I could possibly eat that much every single day.</p>
<p>The answer is simple (and delicious).  I drink green smoothies!  I&#8217;m not a salad person.  I can only eat so much steamed spinach.  But in a banana-pineapple-blueberry smoothie, I can stuff an entire head of romaine or up to four cups of kale or dandelion and drink it down with ease (and pleasure).</p>
<p>The health benefits of dramatically increasing the greens in my diet are many.  I get a significant amount of my calcium and iron in my diet from greens.  I get a ton of magnesium, a mineral that many people are deficient in.  Vitamins A (as beta-carotene), C and K are all abundant in greens. Greens are a superfood, and getting 1 &#8211; 2 bunches per day in your diet in the form of green smoothies will do wonders for your health.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s a question we get asked on occasion:  <em>Why am I constipated after drinking green smoothies?</em></p>
<p>Constipation can be a surprising side effect of increasing the amount of fiber in the diet for some people. Usually, this is a result of a sudden increase of fiber coupled with dehydration.</p>
<p>Let’s say that your usual fiber intake is around 12-15 grams per day, which is too low and the average most Americans get according to experts. Then you suddenly hit your body with green smoothies and whole foods and your fiber intake jumps to 45 grams (or more). On top of that, you have not increased your water intake. All of that soluble fiber in fruits and vegetables is now absorbing moisture in your intestines and slowly trudging through your bowels.</p>
<p>If you are not used to basing your diet around fresh fruits and vegetables, then either increase your water consumption or do a <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/detoxin4days/">part time detox regimen</a> and slowly increase your fiber intake over a week or two.  Avoid taking fiber supplements if you are getting adequate fiber in the diet through green smoothies and fresh fruits and vegetables. Reduce your consumption of dried or powdered foods (including superfoods).</p>
<p>We also recommend keeping fat intake low in the diet.  The majority of our calories come from carbohydrates, but our fat intake rarely, if ever, exceeds 15-20% of total calories.  Eating too much fat with fruit, or adding too much avocado, coconuts, nut butter or oily seeds to green smoothies might exacerbate constipation, while causing gas and bloating.</p>
<p>If constipation continues to be a problem, or if it is a common problem for you no matter what diet you are on, then consult a qualified health practitioner who can help rule out any health issues.</p>

They are not as bitter as kale and dandelion, and they are easily hidden by just about any sweet fruit.  Beet greens have a texture similar to Swiss chard, but with a milder flavor.</p>
<p>Beet greens are in the same plant family as chard and spinach. They make a great <a href="http://www.incrediblesmoothies.com/green-smoothies/why-and-how-you-should-rotate-your-leafy-greens/">rotation for cruciferous greens</a> like kale or bok choy.</p>
<h4>Beet Greens Nutrition and Health Benefits</h4>
<p>Two cups of chopped beet greens (our recommend &#8220;smoothie dose&#8221;) contains about 17 calories and almost two grams of protein.  Two cups provide up to 160% RDA of vitamin A (as beta-carotene), 25% RDA of vitamin C, 253% RDA of vitamin K and 8% RDA of vitamin E.  They also contain small amounts of all B-vitamins (except for B12). </p>
<p>When it comes to minerals, two cups of beet greens provide 89 milligrams of calcium (9% RDA), 2 milligrams of iron, 16% RDA of copper, 13% RDA each of magnesium and manganese, 12% RDA of potassium and 11% RDA of sodium.</p>
<p>Like most fruits and vegetables, beet greens contains all essential amino acids.  They are particularly high in the essential amino acid, tryptophan, containing about 10% RDA. Tryptophan can be used by the body to produce the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which regulates mood and sleep cycles in humans.  Getting adequate tryptophan in the diet <em>might</em> prevent mood imbalances and promote healthy sleep cycles.</p>
<h4>How To Use Beet Greens In A Smoothie</h4>
<p>Beet greens have a mild flavor that is easily masked with fruit in a green smoothie. It tastes somewhat like spinach and chard, although it is closer to spinach in flavor.  I prefer it to chard.  You can use it interchangeably with spinach in smoothie recipes.</p>
<p>The neat thing about beet greens is that you can use both the greens and the root (the beet) in your smoothies.  Generally, I only use up to one half of a raw beet in a green smoothie.  Making a smoothie with too much beet and beet greens might produce an &#8220;earthy&#8221; flavor.</p>
<h4>How To Select And Store Beet Greens</h4>
<p>Select beet greens that have a dark, green color and fresh-looking beet roots attached. Avoid any that are wilted or yellowing.</p>
<p>I keep all my leafy greens in clear plastic tubs in the refrigerator (or use your vegetable crisper drawer). Add a strip of paper towel or a dry cloth to absorb excess moisture and condensation. Beet greens are easily susceptible to wilting so eat them up within 3-5 days, depending the moisture level.  Never leave leafy greens in plastic produce bags as they will go bad very quickly.</p>
<p>As with any leafy green, choose organic whenever possible.  Beet greens are typically sold with the beets still attached.</p>
<h4>Beet Greens Smoothie Recipes</h4>
<p>Any recipe on Incredible Smoothies will taste great with beet greens instead of spinach.</p>

I&#8217;ve tried hundreds of fruits and greens combinations and I can rattle off a tasty smoothie recipe for almost any fruit, veggie or green you can think of. </p>
<p>However, my experience and expertise has come with a price. Davy and I have had our fair share of <em>disgusting</em>, vomit-flavored, gelatinous sludge-like smoothie failures. Sometimes, fruits and greens that taste great on their own don&#8217;t play nice inside your blender pitcher.</p>
<p>While flavor is in the &#8220;taste buds of the drinker&#8221;, so to speak, I want to share with you some epic smoothie failures that I&#8217;ve had in the past. I&#8217;m not saying you can&#8217;t try them yourself, but you can&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t warn you.  While some of them have been salvageable, others were just plain undrinkable. </p>
<p><strong>Smoothie Fail #1: The Vomitous Detox Smoothie (with dandelion and blueberries). </strong> This might not sound like an undrinkable combination, but when you mix these two ingredients in your blender, you get a smoothie that tastes exactly like vomit! You really can&#8217;t save this smoothie.  It is that gross. You either have to plug your nose and chug it, swallowing quickly before the gag reflex takes over, or toss it down the drain. </p>
<p><strong>Smoothie Fail #2: The Funky Asparagus Disaster Smoothie. </strong>I think I&#8217;ve given this thin, little green veggie enough tries to start banning it from my smoothies. You wouldn&#8217;t think it would be that bad.  I love asparagus and I was determined to create a delicious asparagus smoothie.  However, I&#8217;ve tried blending it with everything from pineapple to oranges and I still didn&#8217;t like it. I started with about five spears and went down to three. I was finally able to &#8220;hide&#8221; one asparagus spear in a large smoothie, but at that point, the asparagus is nutritionally pointless. I say skip this one.</p>
<p><strong>Smoothie Fail #3: The Blackberry-Kale Gelatinous Sludge Smoothie. </strong> These are one my list for two reasons. First, they don&#8217;t taste all that great together since they are both a bit bitter. You can, however, easily fix this smoothie by adding a banana and an orange or two. The main reason they are on my list is because they congeal into a nasty, gelatinous, jiggly sludge when it sits.  This is not a smoothie to make now and drink later. If you make a kale or blackberry smoothie, drink it right away unless you like to eat gelatinous kale pudding with a spoon. </p>
<p><strong>Smoothie Fail #4: The Broccoli Bleck Smoothie. </strong>At the risk of sounding like a contradiction (yes, I love broccoli and banana blended up together in a smoothie), I will say that broccoli can turn a good smoothie bad. Broccoli doesn&#8217;t play nice with every other fruit, like most greens. You need to know just how to use it. </p>
<p>When Davy and I first made a broccoli smoothie, it was one of the worst drinks we&#8217;ve ever had. Davy put the <em>entire</em> head of broccoli (why not, more broccoli means more nutrition &#8211; and apparently, grossness!) in a smoothie with some pineapple. It was extremely thick, undrinkably bitter and just plan G-R-O-S-S! I have since given broccoli another chance, but I keep broccoli smoothies very simple. I add one banana per 1/2 cup of broccoli florets.  Usually, I add an orange because citrus makes even the bitterest of greens sweet in a smoothie. </p>
<p><strong>Smoothie Fail #5: The Sweet Guacamole Smoothie. </strong> You can definitely add avocado to your smoothie, just make sure you add enough water to blend it &#8211; and don&#8217;t add too much. I never use more then 1/4 of an avocado in a smoothie recipe. The first time I made a smoothie with avocado, I put the entire avocado in with pineapple, banana, peach and lots of spinach.  What I ended up with was some very green, pineapple-flavored guacamole.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve made plenty of other bizarre-tasting, accidental concoctions.  Vomit flavored, metallic flavored &#8211; you name it, if fruit and greens can get funky together, I&#8217;ve tasted it.  Usually, I am able to fix a smoothie fail by adding extra banana, pineapple or orange.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You&#8217;ve no doubt heard people say that candy rots your teeth.  We all know that sugar and strong teeth don&#8217;t mix.  But what about the natural sugars in fruits and green smoothies?  Should you be concerned that a smoothie a day will slowly erode away your smile?</p>
<p>It is true that the sugars in fruit feed bacteria in your mouth, which will then set off a chain reaction that can lead to dental problems if you don&#8217;t practice good oral hygiene. However, fruit shouldn’t be avoided because of this since <em>everything</em> you eat can feed bacteria and produce plaque.  </p>
<p>Fruit doesn&#8217;t dissolve your tooth enamel from just eating it. In fact, some fruits and berries, and especially leafy greens, can add a significant amount of minerals in your diet that help you maintain strong bones and teeth.  Certain foods like cranberries may actually protect your teeth from developing cavities.</p>
<p>Basically, sweet fruit and green smoothies will not rot your teeth unless you have a mineral-deficient diet and poor dental hygiene.</p>
<p>After drinking up to 60 ounces of green smoothie every day along with a fruit-rich diet (and absolutely no dairy) for almost 4 years, our teeth are still very healthy.  At our routine dentist visit last month, we had no cavities, no excessive enamel erosion and no gum problems.</p>
<p>There are a few things that you can do to protect your teeth while drinking green smoothies.</p>
<p><strong>1. Brush and Floss Regularly.</strong> This goes without saying but proper oral hygiene is essential for maintaining strong, healthy teeth. Floss every day and brush your teeth after meals – especially fruit-based meals and smoothies.</p>
<p><strong>2. Rinse Your Mouth.</strong> If brushing isn’t an option after drinking a green smoothie, then rinse your mouth with water. This helps wash away some of the excess fruit juice and sugars on your teeth and gums.</p>
<p><strong>3. Use a Straw.</strong> Sipping your green smoothie with a straw limits contact with your teeth. You can purchase reusable glass (we love our <a href="http://www.glassdharma.com/" target="_blank">Glass Dharma straws</a>!) and even stainless steel straws online and avoid plastic straws that just get thrown away and may leach chemical toxins into your smoothie.</p>
<p><strong>4. Eat Only Fully Ripened Fruit.</strong> The acids in unripe fruit wreak havoc on your teeth. It is better to use fully ripe fruit, especially when making a smoothie.</p>
<p><strong>5. Blend Your Greens!</strong> Leafy greens are rich in calcium, magnesium and phosphorus – three important bone and tooth-building minerals.  Focus on the most mineral-rich leafy greens such as dandelion, kale and bok choy.</p>
<p><strong>6. Get Plenty of Vitamin D.</strong> Vitamin D is also an important nutrient for strong teeth. Try to get some sunshine every day and consider taking a quality vitamin D supplement if you don’t have regular access to sunshine year round (we recommend Garden of Life Raw D3).</p>
<p><strong>7. Make Cranberry Green Smoothies.</strong>  A <a href="http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20051123/cranberry-juice-cuts-cavities" target="new">study</a> published in the journal Caries Research showed that the juice from cranberries “contains a chemical that blocks cavity-causing bacteria from sticking to teeth”. <p>Our experience has shown us that as long as our diet is rich in minerals, and we maintain a standard practice of oral hygiene, there is nothing to be concerned about when it comes to drinking green smoothies and the health of our teeth.</p>
